Unit 3: Discussion 1
This unit deals with stress, how we ‘handle’ it and how it affects us. As you participate in the discussion threads, think about ways to effectively communicate with others to not only get your point across but to avoid adding stress to the particular situation. There are two discussion threads.
You are required to post your initial answers by midnight Wednesday; your comments on the postings of your classmates are due on Sunday at midnight. Please be sure that your comments to peers are substantive; do not simply write “I disagree”; if you disagree, go on to explain your comment and add your own insights. All initial and follow-up responses require research and appropriate citations. You should have a minimum of two postings (one initial and one/more follow-up response/s) for each thread.
The following rubric will be used to score your discussion postings:
1-3 points | Only minimal response given with no elaboration OR failed to complete follow-up postings |
4-7 points | Basic response and follow-up posting; all were clear and relevant, but needed more detail. |
8-10 points | All responses were elaborated, clear, and detailed; complete responses and follow-up postings. |
Stress is simply a fact of nature. The individual responds to stress in ways that affect the individual as well as their environment.Because of the overabundance of stress in our modern lives, we usually think of stress as a negative experience, but from a biological point of view, stress can be a neutral, negative, or positive experience.
- Using your book or another source, define what constitutes stress.
- What are your particular stress factors(=stressors) and how do you cope with each?
- Respond to at least one classmate with some suggestionson how they might deal with their stress factors.
Remember to correctly cite any source you use and if you use direct quotes, use them sparingly and include quotation marks!
